LA Vampires by Octo Octa “Freedom 2K”

LA Vampires is the nom de plume of Amanda Brown, the former member of lo-fi pysch band Pocahaunted and owner of the Not Not Fun and 100% Silk Record labels. When Pocahaunted split up and Bethany Cosentino decided to make generic pop rock, Brown luckily chose a different path, leading to her haunting electo pop she creates with LA Vampires and continuing giving the world great music through her two labels. Octo Octa are a band I don’t know, but whom reside on Brown’s 100% Silk label, which is pretty much the only endorsement I need. The two “bands” created a song titled “Freedom 2K” that seems to embody the sound that Brown cultivates both with her own work and with her label. The song has a deep groove, yet doesn’t succumb to the easy answer. It has a dark ambiance, with a misty glow of nostalgia filtering through the cracks of the melody that forlornly weaves forward via the tinkling synth lines. It is a song that is hard to nail down, but also a song that is hard to ignore. Another resounding success for Brown and one of my favorite songs of the year.
Octo Octa is one guy. Originally from NH now in Brooklyn.
