Single Takes: This Song Is Awful/Awesome And You Are Stupid for Liking/Not Liking It (Georgia Anne Muldrow, Julia Holter, Kelly Moran, Ah-Mer-Ah-Su, Aesop Rock & TOBACCO)

Single Take is a Reviler feature where multiple people give a passing glance at some new music and causally rank it somewhere between 1 (Justin Beiber) and 10 (really amazing). Fun, right? Check out the latest installment below and feel free to tell us who stupid and out of touch we are based on our opinions. Arguing on the internet: the greatest of American traditions.
Georgia Anne Muldrow “Overload”
Jon 8/10
Gorgeous track from an album I have overlooked thus far this year (which I will have to remedy). Digging the throwback vibe of the organ with the overall very modern production style – it works.

Although I’m not familiar with this beautiful lady, I’ll be sure to correct that mistake toot-sweet. Fabulous electric piano-driven, funky soul.
Chris 7/10
This is a nice chill jam, with a catchy beat and cool over dubbed vocals. I could see listening to this in the car decompressing from a long day at work. Not my usual wheelhouse of what I listen to, but this is pleasant.
Julia Holter “I Shall Love 2”
Adam J / A
Aviary was one of my favorite releases this year, and this tune is definitely a standout from that blithe, peculiar set. As capable a visual artist as she is musical, Holter’s video is…arresting.
Jon 8/10
Julia Holter is my Sh*t! Love the unapologetic weirdness of her new record. This is probably one of the more accessible tracks and its beautiful the way she has crafted this kind of dreamy symphony of many many layers of looped sounds.
Chris 9/10
This is the perfect union of Cocteau Twins and Laurie Anderson. I really dig this, a lot. It’s beautful. The video is something I’d expect to see in a gallery at the Walker. I’d love to see this projected on a huge wall in one of their side rooms. The ending of this song, holy shit, powerful.
Kelly Moran – “Helix (Edit)”
Adam J A+
Another one of my favorites this year, Ultraviolet gets caleidoscopic without losing any of its color. This edit of “Helix” plays more to the tunefulness of the piece, so I like it.
Chris 5/10
I’m not really into instrumental songs like this. I mean it’s great as background music, but this isn’t something I see myself ever listening to again, not my type of jam. 5/10 because it’s not bad…it just doesn’t resonate with me.
Jon 7/10
I like how the beginning of the track reminds me quite a bit of Gamelan music. It loses me maybe a tad as it transitions into a more structured electronic melody but overall still dig it. Very chill.
Ah-Mer-Ah-Su – Need You, Need Me
Jon 8/10
A very pretty-yet-danceable pop gem. Extra points for the uplifting and positive message.
Chris 5/10
I probably should like this, but it’s not as strong of a jam as Georgia Anne Muldrow’s song. Meh.

Another artist I need to dig into. Fun video, excellent ebbe-and-flow, all around damn fine break-up song. A
Aesop Rock & TOBACCO are Malibu Ken “Acid King”
Chris 9/10
I had to scroll the screen so I wouldn’t have to look at the video…I just had lunch! Another strong offering from Aesop, super catchy…worthy of many listens.
Jon 5/10
I have a soft spot for Tobacco’s production and I think that shines here. Just never really been that into Aesop as a rapper so that’s my stumbling block on this one.

I love, love, love this track. Knight Rider synths and some mean bars. This video is terrifying. A-
