Lizzo feat. Sophia Eris “Batches & Cookies”
It is amazing how, with the right mix of drive, talent and charisma, you can rocket launch yourself from just another artist into an anchor of a scene in a relatively short period of time. Lizzo has done that. 18 months ago her name probably didn’t mean much to most local music fans, but it seem impossible to avoid her in September of 2013. She burst into most people’s view as part of the group The Chalice, a group that galvanized support in ridiculously quick fashion. More recently she has controlled the narrative with her project Grrrl Party, a group that with one song (“Wegula”) have already made their mark. Now comes what seems like it will be her biggest release yet, a collab album with Lazerbeak from Doomtree called Lizzobangers. As you can hear above, the duo come out firing with the wonked out, futuristic “Batches and Cookies.” Joined by her Chalice and Grrrl Party partner in crime Sophia Eris, Lizzo and Lazerbeak drop a nuclear bomb of a first single. It sounds both grounded in the best of what rap and hip-hop have been while strapping us into a day-glo lighted time machine and giving us a glimpse of what the future will sound like. There is no doubting Lizzo at this point.
Lizzobangers is out on Totally Gross National Product sometime this fall. See Grrrl Party this Wed (Sept. 11) as part of their monthly residency at Icehouse. See Lizzobangers at the Hip-Hop Harambee on Sept 21st at the Nomad with Shabazz Palaces, Big K.R.I.T and more.
