On Their Instrumental Self-Titled Debut, Croz Boyce (Avey Tare and Geologist of Animal Collective) Explore Their Warm and Tender Side (MINNEAPOLIS SHOW TONIGHT!)
Dave Portner (Avey Tare) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) are either 2/3 or half of Animal Collective, depending on the area you are talking about, and you can hear the band’s unsettled-yet-reassuring sound in the duo’s debut, self-titled LP as Croz Boyce. The story from the press materials is that the songs were made passing musical snippets back and forth across long distances, but you wouldn’t know that from the album. Over nine charming, exploratory, mostly acoustic songs, you get a bit of early AC sound while also venturing into a more serene, calming space than usual. It isn’t ambient, per-se, and it’s freak folk, but somewhere in-between, a genreless music that feels both old and new. Dive in below.
