Buke & Gass “Mendula Oblongata”
I remember being surpised when the National came through town last year and the opener was Buke & Gass. Yep, I hadn’t heard of them either. I remember feeling rather indifferent after their set and the memory of what they sounded like pretty much went away after the usually great set by the National. I was reminded of them recently by a email press release about their new material. In addition to being helpful (their name is pronounced byook & gace and it describes their instruments), the release directed me to the groups bandcamp page to check out a free song. The track is the atmospheric, dense folk strut of “Medulla Oblongata,” which didn’t really trigger any memories from the show, but is a pretty good track. The song is from an unnamed album that is “coming out later in the year,” so I imagine we will be hearing a lot more from the group.
