Wild Nothing “Nowhere”
After their snooze-inducing live show, I had mostly forgotten about Wild Nothing. I found a used copy of their excellent debut LP Gemini and then got an email about their new 7” featuring the song “Nowhere.” The LP brought me back to the dreamy, shoegaze pop jams that roped me in in the first place, which encouraged me give “Nowhere” a shot. Unfortunately, no matter how I come at it, “Nowhere” just doesn’t live up to the material on their LP. “Nowhere” is gentle, too gentle, and is stripped of a layer of the haze that made the debut so engrossing. “Nowhere,” with its twee melodies and gentle slide guitar, is so unoffensive that it almost makes me angry. Hopefully this isn’t the direction the band is headed. But after their live show letdown and now this track, I am starting to wonder if Gemini was just lighting in a bottle.
