Listen to the Cacophony of Guitar Noise of “Dust From the Minds” From Ava Mendoza’s New LP The Circular Train (MINNEAPOLIS SHOW TONIGHT!)

I find saw/heard Ava Mendoza as part of the outstanding live version for the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, an album (Music for Four Guitars) that became a band with a surprise Tiny Desk hit that became a live album.

Unsurprisingly, all three members of the Quartet that joined Orcutt are serious players doing interesting, challenging and genre-expanding work. Following great albums earlier this year by bandmates Wendy Eisenberg and Shane Parish, Ava Mendoza joins the fun with her new LP The Circular Train. You can hear an example of her dexterous, hypnotic, circular guitar playing on “Dust from the Mines” below, and check out the whole record that features both instrumental and songs with her singing, all centered around her virtuosos, exploratory guitar playing. If the samples are any indication, it’s a heady trip.

You can see Mendoza alongside local bass player extraordinaire Liz Draper on the final night of Draper’s October residency that we previewed HERE. Music is at 7 and tickets are only $15 to watch these two amazing musicians perform solo sets and some promised “cross pollination” in one of the city’s most intimate venues. Info and tickets HERE.
