The (Local) Fresh Five: Lone Rock Bride, Lazy Scorsese, Egg Girl, Michael Moore, and KYM and the Kick

For the Fresh Five we pick out five great new(ish) jams that we’re currently obsessing over. All of these songs come from local (Minnesota) bands/artists.
Lone Rock Bride are an excellent local country band that just released their debut record Rosette earlier this month. It’s a lovely collection of folk-tinged country music that employs a large array of instrumentation from cello to pedal steel. You can stream/purchase it here. Hope to see them book more shows in the near future!
Lazy Scorsese are a long running local psychedelic pop band hailing from Minneapolis. They have a new EP Mama Bears out this month, with a release show at the Arthouse (5/24). You can stream “Clotheslines” from it today, a haunting combo of post-punk and dream pop.
Queer prank punk band Egg Girl don’t take themselves too seriously – they bill themselves as equal parts punk rock and prank rock. They have a sound a bit reminiscent of the Raincoats off-kilter pop sensibility but with even more humor. They’re first (and last) record ROOMERS will come out later this month (5/30) and you can check out their unique vibe in single “Rich Inner World.”
Michael Moore is a local ambient electronic music multi-instrumentalist that crafts dreamy psychedelia out of a rich palette of drone and ambient electronica. Single “Rhythm Impact” uses dreamy, heavily reverbed guitar noodling (courtesy of Jason DeMars) to create an eerie, somewhat foreboding vibe. Moore will perform tonight at Zhora Darling with Flavor Crystals and Magic Castles (details).
KYM and the Kick is a local queer pop band that combines disco, funk, and pop and a lot of cheek. Their new record The Gift of Feeling came out earlier this month and you can stream/purchase it here. Check out the excellent “Make Yourself Better” above which should get your toes tapping.
