The Fresh Five: Quantic & Nidia Góngora, Nolan Potter, La Luz, Dos Santos, and Navy

British DJ/producer Quantic (Will Holland) recently teamed up with Colombian singer/songwriter Nidia Góngora to release Almas Conectadas, their second record together and a terrific meld of traditional marimba and Quantic’s melting pot of soul, funk, rock and electronic music. Out now via Tru Thoughts. 

Nolan Potter is a dabbler in a wide range of musical styles and he’s an expert at combining them into a unique slurry of psychedelic slacker rock. The term “slacker” doesn’t apply to Potter’s musical skill. While his music has a loose and hazy vibe and an obvious sense of humor to it, Potter also seems the musical polymath – adeptly playing a number of instruments and producing the whole thing himself. For their sixth album, Los Angeles punk/garage band La Luz finally decided to go self-titled. La Luz is out now via Hardly Art and features “Watching Cartoons” a lovely throwback rock lullaby. 

Chicago quintet Dos Santos Recently released City of Mirrors, their fourth overall and second via the International Anthem imprint. Dos Santos’ sound expertly crafts a mix of Lantin musical traditions into a simmering psychedelic stew. Stream/purchase here. 

Dominican singer/rapper Navy released her debut record Bleu this year (Pretty Boy Worldwide) and it features this absolute banger of a track that samples Deniece Williams’ chorus from “Free” and supports it with her own verse. Find the single here.
