Mal / Debut Album Out Now

Check out the excellent debut album from local noise/metal/prog four piece Mal

By Jon Behm ·

Local experimental four piece band Mal recently released their debut record, Malbum, an album that (in their words) “hopefully no one will like.” In service of their mission they have adopted an aggressive style of noise rock, metal, and prog, each a genre all but guaranteed to land with divisive results.

Unfortunately for Mal though they failed said mission – Malbum is downright likeable. I mean it’s not likely to cuddle up next to the rest of the tunes on your holiday chillax mix, but for fans of arty, intensely angular screamy math rock (especially when it’s got saxophone), look no further!

Malbum is a blistering ride through nine songs, each containing some neck snapping lefthand turns while always keeping at least one hand on the wheel. Mal’s sound has an innate melodic sense to it that might not be evident on the surface but is essentially the glue that holds it together. It’s controlled chaos, to be certain, but just enough control to keep the car out of the ditch and still screaming down the road.  </end car metaphor>
