Reviler Concert Recommendations: 5/18 – 5/24 1

A wrap up of the coming week’s recommended shows from Reviler!

5/21: Portrayal of Guilt at Zhora Darling (with Street Sects, Halloween, Giallo)

Portrayal of Guilt are an Austin, TX based experimental hardcore/black metal band. For their latest album Beginning of the End, the band jettisoned any goals outside of shooting for something “menacing,” “compelling” and “must hear.” I’d say they succeeded – their music feels like the soundtrack to a slow and terrifying descent into Hell. 5/22: Smerz at the Cedar

Norwegian duo Smerz (Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg) are masters of the arty, disaffected cool. They make R&B and dream-pop tinged electronic pop music and have a couple albums as well as a recently released Easy EP. Tix/Details.

5/23: Freddie Gibbs at the Palace Theater

Freddie Gibbs is a legend, notably collaborating with some of the best producers in the business (Madlib, Alchemist) on some of his best work. He’s come a long ways from where we first saw him at a free Fifth Element in-store performance 15 years ago. Tix/Details here.

5/23: Papa Mbye at the Cedar Cultural Center Plaza (FREE) (with D. Santos, Nectar, DJ Miguel Vargas)

The Cedar is kicking off it’s free Summer show series on it’s West Bank plaza space this coming weekend with a bunch of local talent. Leading the group is Gambia-born, Minnesota-bred experimental R&B/Soul singer Papa Mbye. Details here.
