Liturgy began in 2005 as the solo project of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, who first made waves with her Manifesto on Transcendental Black Metal alongside the band's debut album, before expanding into a full band over several lineup iterations across the following decades. Their sound has continually evolved into more experimental territory, fusing black metal riffing with orchestration and glitchy electronics. Their 2023 album, 93696, an 80-minute opus, stitches together many of these recurring threads — crescendoing flutes crashing into drum-machine beats, proggy time shifts, and complex math riffs woven into a cohesive whole — and was met with widespread critical acclaim.
