The Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983, when guitarist Wayne Coyne started a band with his brother Mark on vocals and bassist Michael Ivins. After Mark left, Wayne took over as the main singer and songwriter. After several albums on the indie label Restless, they signed to Warner Bros., and their 1993 album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart included the hit "She Don't Use Jelly," which broke the band into the mainstream. The Soft Bulletin (1999) was NME's Album of the Year, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002) followed, with the group going on to win three Grammy Awards. Coyne and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd have been the band's only constant members since 1991, and Ivins left in 2021.
