Do I have mixed feeling about Record State Day? Yes. It can easily feel like a Black Frida-esqe, consumerism laden shit-show that turns buying records into a contest that is somehow more about owning one of the limited copies released of a given record than actually being a fan of music—BUT, it also has now twice meant that Ty Segall has covered T Rex songs, which is has to be worth something. Whether it would have happened otherwise is beyond the point, because Ty Rex 2 is happening for Record Store Day 2013. Listen below Segall’s faded take on “The Motivator” from the EP and, if you are so inclined, start lining up now to fight other record nerds for a copy come 4/20.
