Local rap legend I Self Divine has started 2021 on a high note with a multi-part suite of a song that packs as much of a punch as other artists entire albums. “The Disrupter Suite” is nearly eight minutes of tensely-wound lyrics about the challenges we are facing as a society matched in their brilliance by Medium Zach’s textured beats that flow beneath the storytelling.
Near the end of the song, I Self Divine raps he is “at the intersection of art, music and politics/not art for arts sake, more like empowerment,” and the song at that point has been seven amazing minutes of proving that very point. The song is of this moment – especially relating to George Floyd, the uprising here in Minneapolis and the work to address the racism and police brutality that led to where we are now – while also weaving a story that is hundreds of years in the making.
It is a simply stunning document that it is a must-listen as it captures the moment we are living in. It’s so multi-faceted, compelling and important that you’ll find a new wrinkle each time you listen. Dive in below.
