alone-a: “The Door” | New Album Out This Spring

Solo artist alone-a (Alana Horton, who also moonlights as part of The Controversial New Skinny Pill) creates an elegantly palatial sound out of a palette that consists only of vocal textures. Using her voice alone, improvisationally inspired and refracted through digital delays and signal processing, Horton is able to build songs that feel comprised of a far wider spectrum of instrumentation. The result feels like something between the realms of Julianna Barwick’s ethereal magic and Bon Iver’s pitch-modulated experimentation.
Horton will release her forthcoming record a veil, a prism on 4/3 via Bumpy Records and you can stream a single “The Door” from it now. Leading off with what feels like either modified strings or synth at the beginning (but is actually of course, Horton’s modulated voice) the single is expansive and forlorn, a melancholy piece of crystaline beauty.
