Introducing: Megasound (Show Friday!)

Party Nails has been on my radar for a long time, Elana Carroll has been turning out great songs since my first introduction with 2017’s “Blow Me Away” through last year’s “Movie Scene.” (authors note: have we ever got a local Party Nails show?). Carroll’s music falls “somewhere between pop, alternative and electronic” but with Megasound the alternative shines bright by pairing up with Kerry Alexander and Chris Hoge of locals Bad Bad Hats.
Megasound band’s origin story is a good one: already longtime friends, back in 2018 Carroll joined Bad Bad Hats on stage for an encore of cover of “Pretend to Be Nice,” the Josie and the Pussycats hit written by Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger for the 2001 movie. While the early 2000s teen movie power pop and Schlesinger are great references, Megasound also draws heavy from 90s alternative rock of like Veruca Salt and Juliana Hatfield. You can hear Hatfield echoing strong through the guitar sounds and melodies of “Dog Leash” straight into the big fuzz guitar chorus. There’s no synths that dot both of the bands work, this is pure guitar-driven pop with Carroll’s voice leading the way. The band’s self-titled debut is out as of last week on Don Giovanni and runs strong with these references. You can hear those 2000s movie soundtracks “na na na na” chorus of “Lemon Peel”. Songs like “Speck Of Dust” add an almost Beck like swagger into the mix.
While they’ve played a few local shows in the last years but Friday night’s Turf Club show serves as both an album release and tour kickoff for the band. Locals Agnes Uncaged (formerly Creeping Charlie) open bring a similar spirit of the 90s and early 2000s.
