MaLLy: “Once We’re Kings”
Twin City rapper MaLLy has been dropping a new video on the 15th of the month for the past few months as part of his “Free on the 15th” series. The latest is for “Once We’re Kings,” a gritty tune that features hard hitting beats from the Sundance Kid. Much like the last new tune we heard from MaLLy, “Once We’re Kings” displays a distinct throwback East Coast vibe. It wouldn’t be out of place in the mid-nineties NYC rap scene at all. MaLLy’s no-frills approach to rhyming seems to have more in common with guys like Pharoahe Monch or Prodigy than the local rap vibe generally attributed to “Minnesota Nice.” “Once We’re Kings” definitely isn’t nice at all. In fact, some of the lyrics are downright ugly. But to MaLLy’s credit, he knows how to turn an ugly subject into a beautiful rhyme.
