Five Acts Not To Miss At Caterwaul

The inaugural edition of Caterwaul is finally upon us after the initial delay back in 2020. Even if you’re totally up on things there’s a ton of bands here to take in for 4 days. Here’s 5 can’t miss sets to watch for:
– Adam
The Tunnel
When: Sunday at Palmer’s
San Francisco’s The Tunnel has been around since 2008 churning out the noisy twisted blues swagger of early Nick Cave at the Gun Club (see our review of 2011’s Fathoms Deep). They’re anchored by the long time core members Sam Black and Jeff Wagner with new-ish drummer Michael Jacobs. I’m not sure they’ve ever been to Minnesota so watch for them.
S E R V I C E
When: Friday at Mortimer’s
You may recognize the husband and wife duo that anchor the band as Russell Simins (JSBX) and Jilly Weiss (We Are Hex). They’re launching a tour in support of their debut album which just dropped last month full of swaggering punk rock to get you going.
Coordinated Suicides
When: Sunday at Palmer’s
Coordinated Suicides hail from Madison and continue in a long tradition of the midwest’s fiercely heavy and unique bands. A full length is promised on the way as the new EP below dropped as a preview.
Couch Slut
When: Saturday at Mortimer’s
Couch Slut bring an absolutely fierce and unique mix of hardcore, metal, grindcore with plenty of nods to the early works of Swans and beyond mixed with confrontational and unflinching lyrics. If there’s one band I would tell you not to miss, this is it.
Bummer
When: Saturday at Palmer’s
Bummer rolls in to town from Kansas City a little more often than the previous bands recommended here but it doesn’t matter because their 2021 record Dead Horse is that good and you should see them any chance you get. If you don’t believe me, jump right into checking out that riffing on “JFK Speedwagon”.
Caterwaul takes place this Friday through Monday (May 27-30) at Palmer’s and Mortimer’s. For tickets, lineups and all that other stuff get yourself to Caterwaul.org.
