Unstable Shapes Drop 90s Noise Rock Inspired Debut Album (Release Tonight!)

After several years of honing their craft live and releasing a series of singles, the locals Unstable Shapes are dropping their debut album, Delicate Machinery, on Learning Curve Records today. This 10-song album propels through a solid 38 minutes, driven by jagged guitars, tight, muscular drumming, melodic bass, and raw, passionate vocals. From the opener, “Prince Kissinger,” you can hear the band’s influences blended into their tight package: Drive Like Jehu’s dissonant math swagger, Unwound’s rhythmic precision, and traces of other 90s stalwarts like Lungfish and Sonic Youth. In songs like the last single, “You’ve Been Selected To Be Bones,” singer Andrew Cahak explores themes of modern anxiety and disconnection. While the album strongly echoes an amalgamation of their 90s heroes, Delicate Machinery is a solid, tight, and fully formed debut statement from the band that is both noisy and melodic. Catch their release show tonight at Zhora Darling, or see them around town soon and discover why they’ve generated great hype, including a spot on last year’s Picked To Click from Racket.
