Austra releases the short film accompaniament “Chin Up Buttercup: The Movie” (Show Saturday!)
Artist: Austra
On her latest album Chin Up Buttercup, Canadian artist Katie Stelmanis aka Austra (who we last caught up with in 2013) takes heartbreak and turns it into club-ready catharsis. From the anxious unease of Future Politics to the grand, theatrical pop of HiRUDiN, this record feels like the natural culmination of everything she’s been building toward, pushed confidently to the next level. To accompany the album, Stelmanis has released a striking seven-minute short film, Chin Up Buttercup: The Movie. Written by and starring Stelmanis and directed by Hedia Maron, the film blends behind-the-scenes footage, poetic spoken interludes, and dramatic narrative threads into a compact distillation of the record. It weaves together fragments of “Amnesia,” the title track, and an in-studio rendition of “The Hopefulness of Dawn,” moving through scenes of home, a bowling alley, a landfill, and her car, before opening into a blissful, mist-soaked run through an open field. It’s the album’s complete journey, rendered beautifully in seven minutes.
Austra plays the Entry but seems destined for the bigger stages so enjoy this chance at a close intimate evening. RRA (aka Sara Abdelaal formerly of CLAPS) opens the night. More information here.
