Big Freedia: Azz Everywhere
New Orleans’ ‘Bounce” artist Big Freedia’s tagline is a little rhyme reads: “The dick eater. The late night creeper. Stalkin’ yo man. You betta believa,” which makes more sense when you consider that Freedia is a self-proclaimed “sissy,” or a biological man that identifies as a woman. Obviously no shrinking violet, Freedia performs raucous sample-heavy dance hip-hop (called “Bounce”), which she describes as “an original urban music rising up from the intimate and fun-loving nature of the New Orleans housing projects.”
Listening to Freedia’s single “Azz Everywhere” and you can certainly hear where the fun loving aspect comes from – the song is a patchwork of slapdash west coast rap, funk, and grime – something that reminds one a little bit of M.I.A.’s beginnings as a low-fi quilter of genres. While Freedia currently performs almost exclusively in New Orleans, she’s definitely a rising star to look out for. She’s recently seen some success in a slew of Brooklyn shows and will head to FunFunFunFest next week – so don’t be surprised if one day soon she’s “stalkin’ yo man” in your hometown.

I read about Sissy Bounce this summer in the NY times magazine, but this is my first time actually hearing it. Interesting stuff. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/magazine/25bounce-t.html
