Ry Cooder “No Banker Left Behind”
Ry Cooder is a legend in his own right, with his seminal guitar work (Stones, Beefheart), his contribution to bringing together the Buena Vista Social Club and his classic soundtrack work, but that doesn’t mean he has checked out from the real world. Luckily for us, Cooder never achieved the riches and fame he deserved, but that just means he doesn’t live in a rock star bubble and has been plugged in enough to realize how fucked up things really are. Combining that fact with his rich musical talents, Cooder made a new album of Pete Seeger meets John Prine meets Woody Guthrie like protest songs. The tracks are whip smart, musically adventurous (as is expected from Cooder) and downright damning of the current situation we find ourselves in. My favorite of the bunch is the folk stomper “No Banker Left Behind.” Sounding like a perfect soundtrack to the Occupy Wall Street protests, this song is equally infectious and enraging, and another feather in the cap of an amazingly talented musician.
