Shabazz Palaces; “Shine a Light” (feat. Thaddillac) / Show Thur
“Shine a Light” is one of the singles off of their new 2017 record Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star (which also has a companion release in Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines). Both LP’s are excellent but if anything, the presence of the single (which is one of this year’s strongest) gives the former a slight edge.
More so than any recorded Shabazz Palaces’ material though, their live performance is without a doubt the best way to hear the duo. While you might not expect a rapper/beatmaker combo to light up a whole stage, Ishmael Butler and Tendai “Baba” Maraire do a pretty damn good job of it. And they will do so tomorrow night at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall which is being presented as part of the Red Bull Select program (which you can RSVP to today and get a five dollar ticket).
Also, speaking of rapper/beatmaker duo’s that might up the stage, Kill the Vultures will also perform. As will the incomparable ZULUZULUU and Seattle rapper Porter Ray. Come to think of it, that is a FANTASTIC lineup. One that should not be missed.
